We’re currently transitioning from 50g to 100g skeins. During this period, your order may arrive as either one 100g skein or two 50g skeins.

Number 2 traces its roots all the way back to our very first batches in 1999 - long before we even dreamed of spinning for ourselves. Back then, we called it “Shetland 4ply” or “Ryeland 4ply,” and the mill was just down the road. It’s changed a bit since then, but the spirit is the same: versatile, reliable, quietly excellent wool.

These days, Number 2 is our go to sportweight, a 2-ply worsted spun yarn that manages to be smooth and bouncy without ever feeling too refined. The plied structure gives it balance and strength, while still trapping plenty of air for warmth and softness. It behaves beautifully on the needles, with just the right elasticity for colourwork, lace, and anything that needs definition.

The fibre itself is breed-specific, though not always single breed. We sort and blend according to what the fleece tells us, a certain handle, a particular length, a shade that wants to shine. Shetland is a regular star here (we’re a bit biased, with a flock at home), but you’ll find plenty of character across the range.

In the mill, Number 2 just works. It spins like a dream, making it one of our most satisfying yarns to produce. On the needles, it’s a delight - warm, forgiving, and versatile enough for garments, accessories, and colourwork heirlooms. And off the needles? It just keeps getting better.
