Unruly: Monday

The yarn we got spectacularly wrong.

Monday was supposed to be Beacons.

We were spinning our usual 75% Polwarth, 25% Romney blend, destined to become Beacons DK. Then Monday morning happened, the spinning maths went rather badly wrong, and instead of Beacons we made this.

A fine, light fingering weight yarn at around 450 metres per 100g. Completely wrong. Rather lovely.

There are just 16 skeins, because fortunately we discovered the mistake before we'd made very much of it.

THE ACCIDENT

This really was just bad maths.

We were spinning Beacons, our DK-weight Polwarth and Romney yarn. Somewhere between working out the draft, setting the spinning frame and actually making the yarn, the numbers went awry.

What came off the frame was far finer than anything we'd intended to make.

Rather than consign a perfectly good yarn to the mill's collection of useful odds and ends, we've twisted it as a three-fold, skeined it, and given it a place in Unruly.

Sometimes getting the answer wrong works out rather well.

THE FIBRE

Monday is spun from 75% Polwarth and 25% Romney wool, left completely undyed.

Polwarth brings softness and a smooth handle, while Romney adds a little more character and structure. The result is a fine, natural white yarn with plenty of woolly character despite its light weight.

UNRULY

Unruly is where our mistakes get to misbehave in public.

It began with Folly, made when we picked up the wrong cone while plying. Monday exists because we apparently couldn't be trusted with arithmetic at the beginning of the week.

Every Unruly batch is different. They aren't planned as products and they aren't designed to be repeated. They're the useful, interesting and occasionally rather beautiful results of running a spinning mill where things don't always go quite as intended.

Once they're gone, they're gone.
