Robust, mill specification skein winder, built for winding skeins (aka hanks) for dyeing, washing or ready for sale.
This 12-spindle skein winder came to us from Cambrian Woollen Mills in Llanwrtyd Wells when the mill closed. Sadly, much of the machinery from the mill was dispersed or scrapped, but we were fortunate to rescue this winder and give it a second working life.
After several years standing unused, it required a complete mechanical rebuild before returning to service. Since then, it has been a dependable part of our own production, winding skeins from cones for both Garthenor Organic yarns and commission spinning projects.
As our production has grown, we’ve moved to a larger winding system, leaving this machine ready for its next home.
Before entering service at Garthenor, the machine underwent a comprehensive rebuild.
The objective was not to modernise the machine, but to return it to reliable working order while preserving its original design.
Like many textile machines of its era, it is straightforward, robust and built to be maintained rather than replaced.
The machine winds twelve skeins simultaneously from cones using a common drive system.
A traverse guide lays the yarn evenly across each skein, producing consistent, well-formed hanks ready for washing, dyeing or retail.
We’ve successfully used it with everything from fine laceweight yarns through to heavy chunky qualities. Its simple mechanical design makes it equally suitable for sampling, regular production or larger bespoke batches.
The fixed skein circumference is suitable for standard commercial hanks, while the generous arms comfortably accommodate everything from small sample skeins to large production hanks weighing several kilograms.
A mechanical revolution counter allows repeatable winding lengths without unnecessary complexity.
Every workshop is different. Some customers want an original machine, while others prefer the convenience of modern controls and electrical systems. We therefore offer three levels of refurbishment, with additional options available to suit your requirements.

The machine is in good working order and has been in regular use within our mill.
Cosmetically it shows the honest signs of an industrial machine that has spent decades doing the job it was designed for, but it remains clean, complete and ready to return to production.
The machine can be demonstrated fully under power before purchase.
Collection is welcome from our mill in West Wales, where we can load onto your vehicle. We are also happy to prepare the machine for domestic or international shipment if required.
