Here at Garthenor Organic, yarn always begins with fibre. Never planned backwards, always thoughtfully moving forward from the fleece. It's a slower, more considered process - but for us, it's the only way to craft truly exceptional yarn.
We've had a beautiful batch of Shetland × Cheviot fleece quietly waiting in the mill, patiently wondering what it might become. With a little experimentation and plenty of patience, we found it spun beautifully. The result? Four new shades joining our Number 2 range, each one uniquely textured, ruggedly warm, and carefully balanced.
Why Shetland × Cheviot?
We've known this breed cross intimately on our own farm. While Shetlands are renowned for their silky softness, Cheviots bring strength, structure, and a rugged beauty. Together, they produce wool that's both warm and bouncy, soft yet robust. Our Shetland × Cheviot ewes were fiercely protective mothers, loyal yet more than a little wild - able to leap a six-foot gate without blinking. While we've since returned to purebred Shetlands, our admiration for this remarkable cross has never faded.
Meet The Shades
Oatmeal
Warm, rustic, and inviting with a subtle cooler undertone, thanks to the gentle addition of Manx Loaghtan fleece. This blend captures a uniquely comforting balance.
Pure Shetland × Cheviot in a clean, subtly cool white. Its simplicity showcases the breed's natural beauty, like the tops of the Cheviot hills, dusted with snow.
Boldly textured and robust, Granite features a striking contrast, half Shetland × Cheviot and half Black Welsh Mountain - ruggedly captivating with an unmistakable character.
Each of these new shades came to life in our West Wales Mill. From the first spark of an idea to the last turn of the spinning bobbin, everything happened here under one roof. It's how we're able to create yarn that's authentic, connected, and genuinely special.
These shades didn't exist mere weeks ago. Now, they're here: warm, rugged, and ready for your next project.
A clean, creamy white. The name Rigging was inspired by old sailing ships - the weathered white ropes of the rigging perfectly encapsulate this undyed shade. Not as harsh as bleached, artificial white.
